NLCA trustees meeting at The Foyer, Pelham Street, on

Thursday, August 6, 2026, at 6pm

Treasurer’s report: NLCA’s account has a credit balance with no major expenses planned. The Zettle app has been used with success on a mobile phone for purchases of books etc. It is easy to install and use so other trustees are encouraged to try it – Vice chair Peter Wingate Saul will meet treasurer Maria Barney so he can get it set up.

The Charity Commission annual report is due by October 31 and Maria will file this online.

Trustees agreed to see how much the NLCA 50th anniversary has cost so far and also approximately how much money has been generated from sales of merchandise and books etc. A total of 1,000 Best of the North Laine Runner books were ordered so a rough estimate of how many are left is needed – they are not solely linked to 2026 and will continued to be sold in future. It is difficult to list how much money has been raised from individual items (tote bags, pens, calendars etc) as funds have been paid in from various directions and mixed together with sales and donations, but Maria will list the expenses and income as far as possible.

Planning: 42 Tidy Street – short term let – appeal dismissed. Brighton Council has been in contact with the planning agents for the owners and they have agreed to cease using the property as a short term let from September 1, 2026 and the council has been told all bookings after this date have been cancelled.

Galeed Chapel – Peter W-S has met with the proposed purchaser, architect Rob Beach-Beer who has contacted the NLCA in connection with his proposed plans for the building before entering into discussions with Brighton Council for pre-app planning. The current proposal is to turn the building into one large residential single dwelling (not a house of multiple accupation) with an internal courtyard at the north end, and discussions progress.

Anti-tagging: The meeting agreed thiis has had a new lease of life with new anti-tagging kits put together by Emma.

Social: NLCA’s comedy night at Komedia on September 28 has all acts booked. Tickets cost £10 and can be bought online live from the Komedia website. Lisa will send out a Mailchimp in the next few weeks to encourage ticket sales. Kim will distribute posters.

David Sewell's annual NLCA tea party is on Sunday, September 6 in the Pavilion Gardens.

NLCA future meeting: Peter W-S will chair the meeting on the future of North Laine and North Laine Community Association at Komedia, Gardner Street, on Monday, September 21. A meeting to finalise arrangements will take place beforehand.
