Pussy Riot's tee-shirts designed in North Laine

NO PASARÁN! (meaning ‘None shall pass!’) has served as a cry of revolutionaries and soldiers throughout history. It has been used time and time again in protests worldwide and most recently by the feminist female punk rock band, Pussy Riot.

Pussy Riot

Maria Alyokhina (24), Nadezhda Tolokonnikova (22) and Yekaterina Samutsevich (29) have been sentenced to two years in jail after their controversial storming of the altar of Moscow’s main cathedral in February and belting out a ‘punk prayer’ calling on the Virgin Mary to rid Russia of Vladimir Putin.

Supported by various celebrities

Supported by the likes of Madonna, Moby and Sir Paul McCartney, the trio's anti-Putin stance has not only propelled a protest against their treatment but the international profile of their cause has multiplied by the hour, encouraging dozens of worldwide protests, not to mention the outcries via newspapers and social media sites.

Tee-shirt designed by JunkFunk

You can imagine our shock to see our JunkFunk design, born in Brighton over a year ago - NO PASARÁN! emblazoned across media waves - appearing on the chest of Nadezhda Tolokonnikova as she fought for free speech against Vladimir Putin. We receive worldwide orders on a weekly basis but had no idea that one from Russia would greet us as we flicked through the newspaper!

Courageous and brave

We followed Pussy Riot's trial assiduously, with our fists in the air supporting them wholeheartedly, so we were sad to hear of the outcome but we are in admiration of their courageous, brave and revolutionary stand.

Honoured that she chose our classic design

JunkFunk is an independent lifestyle shop situated on Gloucester Road in North Laine. We design and produce all our tees and we're honoured that Nadezhda Tolokonnikova selected our classic design to project her ideology to the world.

Donations to Amnesty International

To show how much we really do support Pussy Riot we are making a donation from online sales of the ‘No Pasarán!’ tees to Amnesty International.

Comments/reviews:

What a great story! Why hasn't this gone further? I will come back to the shop some time soon, before Christmas, and have a chat again about doing an article on this for my journalism course at City College.
