How Komedia might look with the addition of the Duke of York's famous legs

In Komedia in Gardner Street

The Duke of York’s Picturehouse is to take over part of Komedia in Gardner Street.

Three screens

There will be three screens at Komedia, although of course it will still put on cabaret, live music, comedy and children’s theatre events. The new screens will have 149, 110 and 32 seats respectively, compared with the Preston Circus site’s 283. Expansion into Komedia is ideal for the Duke of York’s, as they want to be able to programme smaller films while giving popular movies more time.

Another set of legs

Another set of the famous legs that can be seen at the top of the Duke of York’s building at Preston Circus will be added to the Komedia’s façade and is being designed by Brighton-based artist Jamie McCartney (he of The Great Wall of Vagina fame).

Duke's at Komedia

The new site will be called Duke's at Komedia and will include a café and bar, as well as reclining seats and state-of-the-art digital projection. Work is due to start in July 2012, with a planned opening date of 7th December 2012.

A partnership, not a merger

The arrangement between the Duke of York’s and Komedia is a partnership rather than a merger and the two companies will remain distinct. The winter Cinecity film festival is expected to be among the events on which both venues will collaborate.

Komedia to be refurbished

In addition Komedia will be refurbishing and technically enhancing its cabaret bar downstairs as well as the studio theatre.
