AGM report by NLCA City in Bloom rep, 2011/12

By Gabrielle Villermet

I continue to represent NLCA on the City in Bloom working group.

Kensington Place won Third Place

In 2011 the city won a Silver Medal in the prestigious South South East in Bloom competition. Many thanks to all the residents and traders who made this possible. Then in the City in Bloom competition Kensington Place won third place in the Best Large Street category at their first attempt. Congratulations to all concerned.

Reduced funding for one year

This year has been a difficult one for City in Bloom. Due to Council cuts many of the community competitions were cancelled, which was very unpopular all over the city. Then we were faced with the news that there would be no funding for 2012. There was much campaigning to save ‘In Bloom’ in this Jubilee and Olympic year. In the recently announced budget we were granted reduced funding but for one year only. We aim to try to spread the budget over two years.

In future to be run by a voluntary group

In future ‘In Bloom’ will not be run by the Council but by a solely voluntary group and will probably have a new name. We have to consider fund-raising to deal with the competitions and administration. The Council feels that as an independent group we will be in a better position to apply for grants.

It will be a lot of work...

Discussions are taking place on the way forward and we have to draw up a constitution, elect a Chair etc and open a bank account. Running ‘In Bloom’ will entail a lot of work for volunteers, especially without administrative help.

...but there will be more competitions

On a more cheerful note the group intends to bring back most of the competitions that were axed in 2011. I will inform you when entry forms become available. I hope we will have many North Laine entries.
