Pelham Square

A brief history
By Peter Crowhurst, North Laine resident

This tranquil square at the heart of the North Laine offers some respite for shoppers, students and parents with children.

The houses on the southern and western sides were built in the 1840s, at a time when much of the housing in the North Laine was being constructed by speculative builders. The three storey houses on the eastern side were built in the 1860s.

HerĀ  Majesty's Garden

The garden has at various times been used as a playground for the nearby York Place schools and a shelter was built underneath it for use during World War II. In recent years it was landscaped and named Her Majesty's Garden in honour of the Queen Mother in her 80th year.

The two telephone boxes have been designated as buildings of special architectural interest.

Comments/reviews:

Great website. My 4x Great Uncle Thomas Rootes Beard lived in Pelham Terrace, now called Pelham Square, in 1851. He lived at No 2, currently No 23. He was a retired grocer. He had a shop in Chailey on the Green. When he retired his son John Mason Beard ran it. It carried on in the family until around the early 1930s.
