Street party, 25th September 2011
By residents of Over Street
Over Street held its fifth street party on Sunday 25th September, shared again with Frederick Gardens and Trafalgar Terrace.
Window dressing competition and games
The sun shone on tables and chairs brought out into a street decked with bunting and a bouncy castle. Pirates ruled in the Window Dressing Competition, with splendid displays judged again by Vicky of Paint Pots, who kindly donated her fee for making the trophy tile to the Martlets Hospice. The tile was won by Celara, aged 3¾, with an enormous map of a treasure island of pirate treats. Residents enjoyed playing various games, including a giant Snakes & Ladders and Pétanque on a pitch made possible by Travis Perkins.
Food and music
Barbecues sizzled with sausages and burgers from the Brighton Sausage Company and tempting smells came from a huge paella. Indie music by Emily and Justin got the party going. ‘This Lady Sings!’ followed with her infectious mixture of jazz and swing. A table of delicious home-made cakes, a toy stall and a book stall raised £88.93 for the Martlets.
Kung Fu demonstration and other activities
The University of Sussex Kung Fu Club gave a demonstration of Shaolin Nam Pai Chuan, which amazed us all. Prizes were awarded in the Dog Show to the Dog with the Waggiest Tail, the Most Obedient Dog and the Best Turned Out. At the Crafts Stall Pirate Bandannas and Maps of Treasure Islands were created. There was a Pinyata in the shape of a Fire Engine and a Treasure Hunt with clues all along the street. The day finished with a Slow Bike Race and Street Cricket.
Thanks
The party was again made possible through the generosity of Nick Gorton of North Laine Financial Management, Terry Thomsen and other residents. Very many thanks to them and to all those who attended the planning meetings, baked the cakes, and gave their time on the day to make the party possible.
