Event in 'PeLAMB' Square: Sunday 21st August 2011
Poster by Henry Bruce
Sheep flock back after 100 years
In the 19th and early 20th centuries sheep could regularly be seen being driven down Trafalgar Street from the station to end their lives in the slaughterhouse that was at that time at No 15 Trafalgar Street (now Trafalgar Mews).
Sheep coming back
Now sheep will be coming back to Trafalgar Street on Sunday 21st August, when some of them will spend the afternoon in Pelham Square to meet local children and adults, from 2 - 4.30pm (but we assure you they’re not coming to be slaughtered this time!)
Interpretation boards and more
Also there will be interpretation boards organised by the Council and the NLCA showing the importance of sheep to the economy of the South Downs, as well as information on grazing, chalk grassland, volunteer shepherds, butterflies, and the role that North Laine once played in the slaughtering and processing of meat and its by-products. There will also be a Sheep Quiz and anyone having a go will get a butterfly poster.
Health and safety aspects
Hand washing facilities will be provided for all to use after they’ve touched the sheep. The animals will of course be enclosed in a secure pen, but children and adults will be able to enter it in small groups.
All welcome!
So come along on 21st August, with or without some kids in tow - all are welcome.
