South East in Bloom judging on Wednesday 6th July
For residents of Pelham Square and Kensington Place
By Jackie Fuller, North Laine resident
Brighton is once again entering the prestigious South & South East in Bloom regional competition and this year the judging route will go past both Pelham Square and Kensington Place, as well as other North Laine streets. It is hoped that everyone will help to make our area look attractive and impressive to the judges.
Judging on 6th July 2011
The judging will take place on Wednesday 6th July. Could residents please help by displaying hanging baskets, tubs or window boxes outside their houses and tidying their front gardens if they have them?
Initiative with Harvest Brighton & Hove
The judges are also likely to be impressed by efforts towards sustainability and environmental awareness and one idea that came up resulted in an initiative jointly with Harvest Brighton & Hove.
Workshop in Pelham Square, 25th June
There was a free Workshop in Pelham Square for residents of Pelham Square and Kensington Place on Saturday, 25th June, 4-5pm. Residents who came were given window boxes and materials (compost, seeds) for planting cut-and-come-again salad leaves, which can now be displayed on outside window ledges or in front gardens to impress the judges!
City in Bloom competition
The local City in Bloom competition has had to be scaled down this year because of financial restrictions.
This year the Council is asking people to enter as a community rather than as individuals. It’s a great way to meet people, be part of your local community and have lots of fun. And it helps to make our city a nicer place in which to live, visit and work.
Deadline for entries
Get your nominations in by 30 June. All judging for 2011 will take place from 1 to 29 July.
There will be three community categories for 'Most Attractive Urban Area' (sponsored by Brighton Marina):
- Most Attractive Block of Flats
- Most Attractive Street – Small Entry
- Most Attractive Street – Large Entry
Applications can be made through Brighton & Hove City Council's website.
