Brighton Bead Shop celebrates its silver jubilee

On Saturday 5th March 2011 the Brighton Bead Shop in Sydney Street opened its doors for a special celebration. This grand old Dame of the North Laine had turned 25 and was ready for a party!

Everyone dressed in silver and grey

The transformation of the familiar surroundings was amazing. The inside glowed with silver balloons and a mountain of cupcakes sat near the front door, begging to be eaten. The back yard was transformed into a magical grotto, where face-painting artists adorned a queue of eager children. All the staff had come suitably dressed in a mix and match of silver and grey. A treasure hunt ran all day for young customers, who searched for tokens in participating shops in Sydney Street.

A plaque was unveiled

Brighton celebrities Boogaloo Stu and Dolly Rocket performed the grand unveiling of a new commemorative plaque. The dynamic duo literally screamed Brighton with their garb. Dolly arrived resplendent in a fabulous silver frock, killer heels and an enormous turquoise wig, whilst Stu sported a silver and lime green leotard and mirror platform shoes. The stalwart pair posed professionally for photos and handed out leaflets to unsuspecting passers by in the sub zero temperatures.

Raising money for charity

All donations for in-store events, along with 25% of the days’ takings, went to the RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution). The Brighton Bead Shop (a.k.a. Beads Unlimited) have set themselves the huge task of raising £10,000 for the charity during their Silver Jubilee year. If you would like to know about other events they are holding, ways to join in or simply to make a donation please visit their fundraising page:

Thank you to everybody who turned up for this grand event. We raised over £500 in total. We are also running tea parties - watch out for our next event pencilled for September or hold your own. Use of the Bead Shop's front room is free of course.
