Water theme mural for Bond Street

Southern Water has now [2010] completed their three-year project in Brighton, entailing a major overhaul of the city's antiquated Victorian pipes at a total cost of £15.5 million. As a farewell they have funded an anti-graffiti mural with a water theme to thank residents for the patience and understanding shown while the work was carried out.

A different style

The artist is Pearl Bates, who was chosen is showing a style somewhat different from traditional street art and therefore in keeping with Brighton's reputation as a leader in the arts world rather than a follower.

Unveiled in August 2010

Pearl’s mural was unveiled on 12 August 2010 in Bond Street. She said:

“The character of the mermaid sums up my feelings about the city really – beautiful, quirky, cheeky, sexy and fun. I was thrilled to win the competition but also a little daunted about doing something of this size on a wall, which is all new territory for me."
