Discount supermarket opens, March 2009

A newcomer to London Road
By Henry Bruce

North Laine residents now have their own discount supermarket, as Thursday 19th March 2009 saw the opening of another outlet - this time at the site of the old Sainsbury on the corner of London Road and Cheapside.  The site had been left empty for some time and has now been completely refitted and reopened as an Aldi store.

Lucky winners

The long queue started very early on, as the first 100 people in the queue were given 'golden envelopes' with details of free gifts inside.  One lucky winner bagged the star prize of a 26" colour TV and despite the presence of a few of the more colourful residents of London Road, the event passed without major incident.  Staff handed out cakes and balloons and live music was performed in the street by a duo called Serendipity.
