From the lantern to multi-media
Historical curtain-raiser, 14th September 2008
By Rev David Coleman & Rev Zam Walker
Sunday 14th September marked the initiation of Brighthelm Church & Community Centre's new audio-visual installation, celebrated with the help of the Magic Lantern Society, with a show of local history and Temperance Movement magic lantern slides, moving on into the regular Sunday worship. It included the dedication of the multi-media set-up which will be part of the life of Brighthelm from now on.
Such pioneers as David Livingstone were well aware of the inclusive and universal appeal of projected pictures, which was then taken up by Free Churches trying to deal with the social crises connected with cheap alcohol in the last two centuries. Our increased use of audio-visual media today is in line with our intent to be an inclusive community.
