Grocery to bicycles
By Maureen Brand, North Laine resident
82 Gloucester Road, on the south western corner of Over Street has seen a variety of uses. There is early mention in 1854 that this address (then Gloucester Lane) was occupied by a grocer and tea dealer. That trade continued until 1877 when it became a greengrocers.
Bellhanger and general stores
Mr F Boxell, a gas fitter and bell hanger, appears at No 82 from 1885 until 1900 when he adds 'Sanitation Engineer' to his title and in 1902 he rounds it up as 'Ironmonger'. In 1914 D Caffano opened dining rooms until 1918 when Mr D'Arcy opened general stores.
Chemist - herbalist - drug stores
In 1919-20 trade directories show that Mr Hancock was there as a chemist, Mr Jackson a herbalist in 1921 and Mr Baynard similarly 1923-24. Mr Dyson and son took over as herbal drug stores 1929-31. Thenceforward until 1954 Mr Baynard operated first as a chemist and later as an optician. A wall advertisement on burns and scalds, briefly uncovered in later years, may date from this time.
Shopkeeper - and then?
From 1958-72 antiques were sold. Mr Stenton, 1973-74, could summon up only the description 'shopkeeper'. After that, trade directories ceased publication and here it would be helpful to have your memories to fill in the gap. In the late 1990s we remember Luckpenny Antiques, in 2001 Funky clothing, 2002 Fabulous clothing, and 2003 Urban Mobility scooters and bikes. A clothing shop then opened briefly and today No 82 is closed and under renovation.
Can you fill in the gaps 1974 to 2000?
