These are the main planning applications affecting North Laine during April and May 2008, together with NLCA comments as agreed at the monthly community meetings:
77 Trafalgar Street (BH2008/00156): Erection of canopies. Applicant: Mrs B Boujihir. NLCA: Object - proposed canopies contrary to Council policy.
36 Kemp Street (BH2008/00386): Replacement of existing timber door and timber framed windows on front elevation with UVPc door and windows. Applicant: Carl Bennett. NLCA: Object - inappropriate non-traditional UVPc windows and UVPc door. Contrary to Article 4.
52 Kensington Place (BH2008/00237): Removal of 2 chimney stacks at basement level only. Applicant: Mr Nicolas Juba. NLCA: We do not normally comment on internal alterations but trust that the Conservation Officer will ensure no inappropriate changes to this listed building.
Land rear of 39 Gardner Street (BH2008/00671): Proposed 3 storey office block. Applicant: Mr Duncan Thomas. NLCA: This proposed modern office block would not look out of keeping with other buildings in Regent Street. However, as a 'stand alone' building in the current car parking area it would stand out, with flank walls visible from both ends of Regent Street. No comment.
17A Trafalgar Street (BH2007/04130): Increase in height of existing pitched roof and installation of 1 front and 2 rear dormers. (Amendment to refused application BH2007/01341) Applicant: A Mitchinson. NLCA: We have already commented on this application in January. No changes.
95 Gloucester Road (BH2008/00838): Demolition of existing exterior door and adjoining shop bay window. Replacement timber framed bi-folding doors, widen existing exterior step. New retractable awning above new entrance. Metal fence surround to large bin next to entrance. Applicant: Mr James Parrott. NLCA: Object. This proposal would totally change the street frontage of this corner building and of Gloucester Road and is detrimental to the Conservation Area.
153 North Street (BH2008/00700 and BH2008/00870): Installation of 2 Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) and one Business Paying-in Machine (BPM). Applicant: HSBC Bank plc. NLCA: No comment.
51 Gardner Street (BH2008/00793): Alterations and rear extension of the existing house wih separate access to the upper floor flat. Applicant: Mr Mas Shashi Bhavsar. NLCA: Not visible from Regent Street. No comment.
Unit 8 & 9, Block 4, Jubilee Street (BH2008/00724): Installation of new shop front. Applicant: SK:N Clinics. NLCA: No comment.
3 Pelham Square (BH2008/00622): Proposed demolition of 2 existing late rear extensions to be replaced with single storey extensions to form kitchen and dining area. Also reinstate timber sash windows to rear with minor internal alterations. Applicant: Miss Emma Ross. Also BH2008/00623: Listed building consent for above application. NLCA: No comment.
114 Church Street (BH2008/00866): Erection of further storey over existing property to be used as residential accommodation for shop/workshop to create live/work unit. Applicant: Mr John Harrington. NLCA: Object. Overdevelopment and detrimental to the Conservation Area. Would be visible from Church Street and would spoil a rather interesting building.
36 Church Street (BH2007/04336): Conservation consent for the demolition of the building and retention of façade. Applicant: City Property Investments. Also BH2007/04459: Demolition of existing building with retention of front façade. Erection of new structure comprising shop, office, storage and 2 x 2-bedroom flats. NLCA: Although we would prefer to retain this building, this modified application is an improvement on the earlier one. We hope that every effort will be made to protect the façade during building work.
40 Kensington Gardens and 84 North Road (BH2008/01079): 2 new sliding sash windows and 2 replacement windows to south and west elevations (resubmission of BH2007/03466). Applicant: Mr Ray Cox. NLCA: No comment.
