The 2007 street party

National No-Car Day on Sunday 23rd September 2007 saw the first street party in Over Street for at least 20 years.  Masterminded by Elly and Will with nine other volunteers, the day brought more than 200 people together in the street, with neighbours and friends mingling in the sunshine.  Donations from Brighton & Hove City Council, the North Laine Community Association and Nick Gorton of North Laine Financial Management helped to make the day an outstanding success.

Everyone's living room

With bunting overhead, carpet underfoot and furnished with gazebos, chairs and tables the street became everybody's living room.  Succulent sausages from the Brighton Sausage Company sizzled on barbeques to feed the hungry crowd, followed by home-made cakes at tea-time.  The collection box on the cake table raised £62.54 for the Martlets Hospice.

A fun-packed day for children

The children had a fun-packed day.  There were crafts (mask, stress-ball and badge-making, all from recycled materials), with Ruby doing face-painting with her friend Sarah.  Daryl organised street art and created a dynamic mural (on boards donated by Travis Perkins).  Other activities included piñatas, table football and an energetic bouncy castle.

The grown-ups enjoyed it too

For grown-ups there was a very popular pétanque pitch made by Andy, a bookstall, and a large amount of gossiping.  Altogether it was a glorious day enjoyed by everyone there.  Very many thanks to all those who attended the planning meetings, made the cakes, and gave their time on the day to make the party possible.

Another street party in 2008...

Building on the success of the 2007 party, we are planning our second street party for a date in September 2008.  Anyone living in Over Street, Frederick Gardens and Trafalgar Terrace is invited.  If you have any suggestions for the party, do let us know by making a comment below.
