About Marlborough Place

A brief history
By Maureen Brand, North Laine resident

First built in 1772 and known initially as North Row, the street was named Marlborough Place in 1819.  Prominent and much photographed is the King & Queen public house.  Many visitors may be taken in by its timbered Tudor style but in fact it was built in 1931-32. The neo-Georgian Allied Irish Bank building dates from 1933.  It was designed by John Denman for the Citizens Permanent Building Society. The carvings around its windows depict different trades.  No 26, with the black cobble front, on the corner with North Road, is a listed building.
