A North Laine courtyard

By Peter Crowhurst, North Laine resident

Preece's Buildings was a courtyard of small cottages at 103 Church Street, between Gardner Street and Regent Street. The alley leading to the yard is still visible today next to 'Surf and Ski'.

This is a photographic print of the rear wall of Preece's Buildings. An angled chimney stack can be seen against the wall.

This photograph was commissioned by Brighton Borough Council's Environmental Health department. It formed part of a visual record of areas considered for slum clearance. Preece's Buildings was demolished in 1935.
