From urban slum to modern office flats
By Peter Crowhurst, North Laine resident
Orange Row was once one of the worst streets in the North Laine, specially mentioned in the Health Reports of the 1840s. Much of the worst housing in the area was torn down in the 1860s to be replaced by the more spacious housing that can now be seen in Tichborne Street.
Later much of Orange Row was to be used as stabling and it has been only recently that the stables have been converted into residential office units. A walk down Orange Row today and a glimpse into Pym's Gardens (although now sadly gated) will take you back in time into the mid 19th century.
