Sussex Beacon half marathon 2007
By Henry Bruce

North Laine residents were treated on Sunday 18th February 2007 to the sound of over 3,000 runners pounding through the streets as the annual Sussex Beacon Half-Marathon took place.

The North Laine area featured in the early part of the race around the two mile mark and took in Pelham Street, Trafalgar Street, Kemp Street, Queen's Gardens, North Road, Jubilee Street and North Street before disappearing into The Lanes and out towards Hove via the upper promenade

Warm up for the London Marathon

The usual mix of athletes and fun runners took part, with people coming from all over the country, and many using it as a warm-up for the London Marathon on April 22nd. The route started and finished at Madeira Drive and its 13.1 mile distance involved sending the runners out to Hove and then all the way to Black Rock before returning back to Madeira Drive for the finish. Running conditions were good - the weather remained dry throughout if a little overcast, and the area beside the new Jubilee library was commandeered for use as a water-stop: festooned with empty paper cups as runners discarded their empties, keen not to lose a second more than necessary!

Too early for the locals!

The race was well supported overall, although disappointingly few supporters were visible in the North Laine. Possibly this was because it was quite early on a Sunday morning when many residents were enjoying a lie-in, and possibly because most supporters had gathered in Madeira Drive for the official start and by 10.45am almost all the runners had been through.

Were you there?

We are not sure how many North Laine residents were running but please get in touch with us if you were and let us know how it was for you.

The event raised over £80,000 for charity in 2006 and the organisers are hoping that the final total will be better still in this year 2007.
