A brief history
By Maureen Brand, North Laine resident
Viewing the bustling streets of North Laine today, it is difficult to imagine a calmer and quieter time, but in a book A Peep into the Past - Brighton in the Olden Time by J G Bishop, 1892, he describes the following:
"Speaking of cricket, it may be stated that, between 1830 and 1840, Trafalgar Street could boast a cricket field - Shoosmith's - who kept The Union Inn, Glo'ster Lane, from the front of which Inn the field ran to Trafalgar Street. At that time, also, Trafalgar Street had little else on each side but gardens, enclosed by elder hedgerows, and only six streets ran from it. Trafalgar Street can now [1892] boast of 20 streets; whilst its hedgerows have long since been superseded by houses."
