Prize giving at Thistle Hotel, 26 September 2013

By Gabrielle Villermet, City in Bloom Community Group Committee

The Brighton & Hove City in Bloom Community Group (BHCIB) held its first ever prize giving as an entirely voluntary group totally independent of the Council on 26th September 2013 at the Thistle Hotel.

Jean Griffin was MC

The MC was Jean Griffin, who presents the BBC Radio Sussex and Kent programme ‘Dig it’.  Jean did a superb job. She is a Royal Horticultural Society judge and was very appreciative of the many entries and commented on the high standard. The prizes were presented by Cllr Geoffrey Theobald, who was impressed by the number and standard of entries. Prizes were also awarded to winners of the Allotment Federation competitions. BHCIB is not all about flowers – we encourage edible and sustainable planting and community involvement.

Deterred by the late cold spring in 2013?

Sadly nobody in North Laine won a prize this year but don’t let that put you off. There were some wonderful floral displays in North Laine but not all entered the competitions. The very late and cold spring may have deterred some of you. Next year we intend to do the judging a little later. On my walk through North Laine I have noticed many potential prize winners who did not enter, particularly some streets that would do well in the ‘Best Street’ category. I will be knocking on your doors next year to encourage you! We do need the community to support us.

Best Primary School introduced as a new category

We had approximately 30% more entries than last year and we introduced a new category – ‘Best Primary School’. Nine schools entered, which was a good start, and the standard was very high. The judges were impressed by the enthusiasm of the children and what they achieved sometimes in a small space. The first prize was awarded to Carlton Hill Primary School.

Congratulations and thanks

Congratulations to all the prize winners.

We thank Jean Griffin for her help, Geoffrey Theobald, the Thistle Hotel, all the sponsors and judges, B&H City Council for providing us with a room for working group meetings, and the residents and traders who entered and made it all possible.
