Long time Lord Nelson landlord retires

By Peter Crowhurst, NLCA Chair

Graham Boyd, landlord of the Lord Nelson public house in Trafalgar Street for more than eighteen years, left the pub at the end of September 2013 to begin his retirement with his wife Ros. Graham and Ros have been good friends of North Laine and indeed the North Laine Community Association and we wish them well for the future.

Unspoilt backstreet pub

The Nelson is an unspoilt backstreet pub and throughout his time there Graham ran the pub to serve local people as much as customers from further afield. He has been an excellent landlord and shown those qualities that you expect of a traditional landlord.

Local people made welcome

Graham and his staff have always made local people welcome and indeed the Nelson is one of the few community pubs in the area. As most pubs now concentrate on younger people, Graham always made all ages welcome and especially North Laine residents. North Laine is made up of people of all ages and from different backgrounds. There are residents who see North Laine as home and put down roots in the area, and there are residents who are transient in the area. Graham welcomed them all and the Nelson customers always reflected this diversity.

Home for beer drinkers

Graham ensured that his beer was well kept and the pub was always a home for beer drinkers. He always had staff who reflected his ethos and consequently the pub has had a reputation for being a 'proper' pub far beyond the confines of North Laine. We hope that whoever takes over the running of the 'Nelson' continues to run the pub in the same way as Graham has throughout his eighteen years and that the pub continues to serve all the local community.

They supported the community

Graham and Ros always made the NLCA welcome and I would like to thank them for supporting the community. After the monthly Monday NLCA meetings, Graham used to reserve a table for us and whenever we wanted a room for a social function Graham made the back room available and enabled us to have events such as quiz nights.

Wishing them well

The NLCA wishes Graham and Ros well for the future.
