Great Taste awards and Great British Pub awards, 2014

Two North Laine businesses have recently been recognised for the excellence of what they do.

Great Taste awards

The Great Taste awards are said to be the food industry equivalent to the BAFTAs! Products are judged by more than 400 industry professionals and allow the highest quality to stand out in a busy marketplace. Out of the 10,000 entries received, only 153 received three gold stars this year 2014.

Artisan ice-cream maker

One of them was artisan ice-cream maker ‘Gelato Gusto’ in Gardner Street, which won the award for its black truffle and honey flavour. The shop created the unusual ice-cream blend using honey from its own beehives. Gelato Gusto also picked up two stars for its lychee and rose sorbetto and one star for its pear and parmesan sorbetto. Director Jon Adams said: “We’re delighted to receive such a highly sought after and well-respected seal of approval. It’s an honour to have our hard work so well received and recognised.”

Best Spirit Pub

In addition ‘The Office’ in Sydney Street has been named as the Best Spirit Pub in the Great British Pub Awards. The judges were impressed by The Office’s selection of 48 gins, the expert knowledge of the staff and the regular tasting sessions for gin aficionados. The judges described The Office as the “best place to drink gin in the country”.

The Office’s most popular drink is an elderflower gin cup – Portobello Road gin mixed with St Germain elderflower liqueur, topped up with soda and garnished with mint and cucumber.

Manager Sarah Hale was also praised for teaming up with a local baker to offer customers with a sweet tooth gin-and-tonic cakes. Sarah said: “We are incredibly happy to have won. At The Office we are always finding new ways to make our customers love gin as much as we do from our homemade G & Teas to our specialty gin cocktails and tasting sessions.”
