Trafalgar Arches Market

New market set to close

After all the fuss about an appropriate name for the new market at the top of Trafalgar Street under Brighton Station (see here) it was finally called Trafalgar Arches Market. But now it is to be closed after only six months of operation.

No extension to six month lease

The market opened just before Christmas 2014 as a place for artists and makers to sell their wares but it only had a six month lease and this is not being renewed by freeholders Network Rail. Paul Lewis, who runs the market, said he had been given a verbal agreement that the lease could be renewed after the initial period but a spokesperson for Network Rail said the contract made clear that there was no scope for an extension.

Stallholders paid month by month

Stallholders have been paying on a month by month basis for use of the market space but had always understood that it would go on longer than six months.

What next?
